I had so much fun with this one.
This black crappie started as a quiet, familiar fish, but as I worked, it slowly turned into something a little more playful and full of color. I leaned into unexpected hues, letting soft layers of pastel build and shift until the whole piece felt alive and gently glowing.
There’s something about the patterning on a crappie that just invites color… all those spots, all that movement. I wanted it to feel like a moment just under the water, calm, a little dreamy, and full of life.
Drawn by hand using chalk pastels, with lots of layering, blending, and a bit of letting go.
